IELTS Speaking Part 2: IELTS Cue Card/ Candidate Task Card.

Describe a hobby that one of your friends has.

You should say:

  • what hobby it is
  • which friend of yours has this hobby
  • what this friend does for it

and explain whether this is a good hobby in your opinion.

Model Answer 1:
I have many friends who have different kinds of hobbies. Of course, it all depends on their moods, circumstances, trends as well as the weather. However, today I would like to talk about one of those friends of mine who likes to enjoy cycling whenever he gets time. The friend, I am talking about here, is one of my childhood friends from my high school.

My friend, Ryan, wasn’t really a very active person like the other boys of his age when he was attending high school. In fact, when we were enjoying playing football or badminton with other friends of mine, Ryan would sit on the sideline and enjoy watching our game. In other words, he was more of a spectator than a participant in the game.

But, everything changed, if I remember it correctly when he got a bicycle as a gift from one of his uncles. By the way, the gift was given to Ryan because of finishing his junior college with a top grade, and also because of getting admission at one of the prestigious colleges of my country. Since then, Ryan actually became addicted to cycling whenever he would manage some extra time outside of his studies.

Sometimes, he would even refuse to hang out with us because he would want to spend time cleaning his bicycle and checking its parts in order to make sure that his bicycle was in good shape. Anyway, Ryan would love to ride his bicycle anytime and for any season, but he would love it even more during the summertime.

In my humble opinion, I think that it is a good hobby because it keeps Ryan physically active, especially, when he doesn’t like any other physical activities. Besides, this particular hobby also allows him to become close to the mother nature in the outdoor in order to feel more lively instead of just sitting at home idle. Finally, I think that this hobby also gives my friend a boost in his confidence to socialize with others, a good habit he used to lack in the past.

Sample Answer 2:
Many of my friends have hobbies that they particularly enjoy, and some of those hobbies are very common while a few of them are unique and quite interesting. One of my friends, whose name is (…say a name…), collects autographs of famous people, and this, in my opinion, is an unusual hobby.

This friend of mine is nurturing this pastime activity for more than 15 years, and he has a commendable collection of autographs from many famous personalities – both local and international.

During our teenage period, we were astounded to notice that this friend of ours had great courage and patience to manage a way to go near a famous person, even in tight security, and finally collecting this person’s autograph. We sometimes enjoyed it, and sometimes we found ourselves surprised by the amount of effort and passion he could put into it. Later on, we thought that it is an adolescent passion that would go away with time. But surprisingly he still has this same hobby.

A few months ago, when he showed me his collection of autographs, I was simply speechless. He has a collection of more than 2,000 autographs in his diary, books and papers, from many world-renowned writers, politicians, actors, players and other famous people and celebrities.

I value his passion and inspiration for collecting autographs, and that’s why I take this hobby positively. Having some kind of activities and passion is always positive, and they help us learn many new things and gather different experiences which otherwise would not have been possible. So I would opine that this is a good hobby, and I am proud of my friend for his passion and great collection.
