IELTS Speaking Part 2: IELTS Cue Card/ Candidate Task Card.

Describe a street that you know well.

You should say:

  • where the street is located
  • what types of establishments the street has
  • why you visit there and how often you go there

and explain how well you know this place.

Model Answer 1:
Everything in the city, in which I live, is supposed to be familiar to me because I have been living in this city for a long period of time. But, apparently, this doesn’t seem to be so because I am finding the job of describing a street, which I am supposed to know well, a bit more challenging than I had initially thought for some unknown reasons. So, was I wrong all along about knowing my city?

Well, the street, I am going to try to describe, is one of the major streets in the large neighbourhood, where I live. It runs east-west and stretches about one and a half kilometres. If I have got proper information about this street, it was one of the oldest streets in the city as well. In fact, it was made in the very early days of the city’s expansion, and perhaps, that’s why most buildings, which are standing on both sides of this street, look old. Of course, there are also few shops here and there in between the buildings as well as an elementary school for the kids, but the sheer number of the buildings on this street suggest that many families and people live in that part of the neighbourhood.

Luckily, this is a rather wide street, and therefore, even though, it remains fairly busy with all sorts of private and public vehicles, it doesn’t seem to be as congested as a number of other streets in my city. Paved with high-quality concrete, this street connects a couple of major roads which are used to make an exit from our city premise.

Anyway, I visit the street and the place at least once a week, because I use it to go to my uncle’s house, who lives on the other side of my city. Besides, I know this place well because I attended the elementary school there for a couple of years. In fact, I know this place so well that I still remember how most of the old trees there were cut to make room for building new houses a long time ago.

Sample Answer 2:
I would like to describe a street from my hometown for this topic where I had spent a lot of time in my childhood and adolescence period. This street is called Old Grace Street (…or say the name of a street you know about…) and it was quite close to the high school where I used to study at, and popular among young people to hang out with their friends in the evening.

This was not a very wide street, somewhat around 15 feet or so, and it ran through around 600 meters before it connected to the main street on the other side. Only a few drivers and pedestrians used this road since most people preferred to take an alternative road which was much wider. It had just two or three residential buildings back then and a 7-story commercial building, but this is not the case anymore. It is a much busier street these days with its many business centres, shops and food courts on both sides.

I used to visit this street frequently, sometimes 5 to 6 times a week, and spent time with my friends during my high school days. Since now I live in a different city, I rarely visit this street except when I visit my hometown.

This is the place where I had spent some of the best days of my life and it will always be a part of my memory. So it is a special place for me. Being there with my friends, even now, sometimes reminds me of things I used to do there and how precious our young days were. For these reasons, I love this street very much, and it will always be an extraordinary place in my mind.

Well, I feel like I’ve known this place very intimately for a long time. I still remember how lively and vibrant it always was. The fast growth of the establishments there sometimes baffles me, but I still feel like I know the nooks and crannies of this street.
