You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

A friend has agreed to look after your house and pet while you are on holiday. Write a letter to your friend.

In your letter:

  • give contact details for when you are away
  • give instructions on how to care for your pet
  • describe other household duties

You should write at least 150 words.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ………………,

Sample Answer 1:

Dear Ema,

Thank you for agreeing to house-sit for me. It was a great relief when you agreed to take up the responsibilities. I would like to thank you for that and inform some of the chores you should take care of.

If you need to contact me for any reason during my holiday in Thailand, please ring my mobile phone. I’ve written the numbers on a sticky note which I’ve left on the fridge. I will stay at the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok hotel and if I change my hotel, I will inform you of that. Alternatively, you can message me on WhatsApp or Imo.

My cat needs to be fed twice daily so each morning and evening put a handful of cat food in his dish. You will find these in the kitchen pantry. Also, please check throughout the day to make sure he has fresh water. You can give him a small bowl of milk in the evening.

I would like you to water my plants, too. The indoor ones in the lounge only need water once every few days but the plants on the balcony need to be watered daily unless there has been heavy rain. Finally, for security, please clear my mailbox every day and keep the outside lights on at night.

I look forward to seeing you on my return.

Warm wishes,

Sophia

Sample Answer 2:

Dear Sam,

I feel so relieved as you have stepped up to take care of my place and my dog when I plan to go on a vacation. I can’t thank you enough. To be honest, I was really hoping that you would respond to my request when I posted it on Facebook.

I understand that taking care of new stuff can be overwhelming. If you need to reach me for anything while I am away, just send a message either on WhatsApp or on Facebook Messenger. I was told by the resort in which I shall be staying, uninterrupted internet access is available there. My mobile phone, however, will remain switched off. If not, I will keep on receiving calls from work which will ultimately defeat the purpose of this getaway.

As for Tommy, the dog, he doesn’t really need much care. Just ensure that he gets 3 meals a day at 6-8 hour intervals. Also, let him be outside in the evening whenever possible so that he can play with the ball. Also, don’t forget to bathe him preferably every other day so that he doesn’t stink.

I know that you will not stay at my house full time so there aren’t many chores that you need to do. Some small things like emptying the trash can, cleaning the parking area and watering the plants need to be done regularly.

Once again, I really appreciate the help you are extending to me and hope to return this favour sometime.

Best regards,

Rouhullah

Sample Answer 3:

Dear Benjamin,

Hope you are doing great. As per our earlier discussion, I am writing to refresh your mind that you will be looking after my house and pet during my vacation starting from 4th November. Thank you for agreeing to house-sit for me and I owe you a big one.

You can contact me at my email, mobile phone or Facebook. I will check my emails and Facebook regularly. In case of an emergency, feel free to dial me on my mobile phone. I’ve written the numbers on a sticky note which I’ve left on the fridge.

I have already stored the necessary food for my cat inside the kitchen cabinet. I have written down the feeding schedule on the back of the kitchen door. Just make sure the cat drinks plenty of freshwater every day. At night, my cat sleeps in a small bed made for her in the storeroom. She usually sleeps around 9:00 pm, so you have to place her in the living room at that time. You are welcome to use things in my house as if they were yours.

Moreover, I would appreciate it if you switch on the garage lights after the sunset and turn it off in the morning. Also, pick up the newspaper from the lawn every morning.

Hope to meet you soon.

Warm wishes,

Mansoor Afzal
