IELTS Speaking Part 2: IELTS Cue Card/ Candidate Task Card.

Describe an adventurous person you know.

You should say:

  • who this person is
  • how you know him/her
  • what he/she does

and explain why you think he/she is an adventurous person.

Model Answer 1:
There are many different types of people around us. While some of them are just simple and laidback type, others like to try different kinds of things just for the fun of it. My friend, Rabid Hassan, is one such person who likes to try such things that other people wouldn’t exactly try under any normal circumstances.

Let’s start with his “fish catching” activities. Well, how many people have you met who has a “weird” habit of catching fish in a lake by drowning himself into its water for more than a minute? Well, I bet that the answer would be “not too many”. Well, when it comes to Rabid Hassan, who I have known from my early high school days, he exactly does that in order to catch fish from the mud underneath the water of a lake only to find out, of course, that he has caught some big frogs or a big fat snake. Pretty scary, isn’t it?

Well, it may be scary for “normal” people like us, but for an adventurous Rabid, it is just a fun thing to do. Of course, some people may find nothing so adventurous about catching a snake by mistake in a lake, but, I don’t think that they will say the same thing when they know that a person likes to ride his motorbike sometime on an uneven road at a speed which is close to 100 kilometres per hour. By the way, I am talking about an uneven road where a regular person like me wouldn’t dare to ride his motorbike at a speed which is more than 50 kilometres per hour.

Anyway, based on some of these activities, and many others I know about, I think Rabid certainly is one of those persons who like adventures. Besides, I have seen him watching all kinds of TV shows on travel and adventures a lot of times. Finally, his intense desire to go to places, where nobody would dare to go, certainly makes him one of the adventurous persons around me that I can think of.

Sample Answer 2:
My younger uncle, James, in my view and experience, is the most adventurous person I’ve ever seen and met. He is my father’s younger brother and is around 35 or 36 years old. I know James since my childhood and he often visits us and talks to me about many adventurous activities he has done or has planned to take part in in the future. I have always known him as an enigmatic man who loves adventures and enjoy exploring new things and places.

I’ve heard lots of stories about him and his brave ventures. I guess many of them are so exciting and adventuresome that they can be easily transformed into TV series or movies. In my childhood, I often found that my uncle disappeared from home, and nobody actually knew where he had gone! Then, all of a sudden he used to come back and live life as if nothing had happened. My young mind often pondered about his disappearance but could not comprehend what was actually going on. Now I know that it was pretty natural for him to disappear as he wished, and it was in order to get some new experience in life!

I believe that my uncle James does not lead a conventional social life and he is not made for married life. He loves to read voraciously and visits different places. He also opposes the idea of doing the same thing every single day. He has never tried to get a job even though he has completed his university education with distinctive academic results. Most of the stories that I have heard about him from others are testaments of his preference for an unconventional life that would be full of adventures.

Sometimes his stories are purely interesting and sometimes plainly unbelievable. Thus once he disappeared for a couple of weeks and came back with the story that he had found a place where ghosts roam around! Then again, once he came back with a hermit-like look, and we learned that he lived in a forest with some strange people for about 5 weeks.

There are so many fearless stories that I’ve heard about him like killing a giant snake with his bare hands, swimming in a big river to rescue a victim, visiting Egypt and living in a desert for many days and so on. But, I believe that the most adventurous thing he attempted to do is to reach the top of Mount Everest. Everything he does is a mystery to me, and I believe I have never met anyone more brave and adventurous than my uncle James is.
