You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

As the number of private cars has increased, so too has the level of pollution in many cities. What can be done to tackle this increasingly common problem?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

You should write at least 250 words.

Sample Answer 1:

In the past few decades, mankind has made tremendous technological advances and world has truly become a small village because of globalisation. Now, more and more people are able to afford cars. This has caused an increase in the level of noise and air pollution in large cities.

One solution would be to impose a large amount of tax on privately owned cards. This would discourage people to use their own vehicle to commute to work and utilise other means of public transport. This can definitely reduce the traffic in urban city areas. However, this only deals with a part of the population.  Rich could easily afford to pay the higher tax; while, on the other hand, only poor would be affected by this law.

Another way government could tackle this problem is to encourage people to use public transportation. The legal authorities could introduce more comfortable and convenient trains, buses and metros to attract more people.  As a result, more and more citizens would use public transport services and thus the level of traffic and pollution would definitely reduce.

Lastly, the government should put more money into researches to find more renewable resources such as solar power and wind instead of using coal and petrol.  In addition, there could be seminars or lectures to educate people about how our ways of living are affecting the environment. This may not be a quick solution but it does help to tackle the issues at hand in a long run.

In summary, it is partly government’s and partly individual’s responsibility to pay attention to increasing pollution and find ways to reduce it if we want to leave a greener planet to our children.

Sample Answer 2:

Essay Topic: As the number of private cars has increased, so too has the level of pollution in many cities. What can be done to tackle this increasingly common problem?

Answer: The ease of moving to other places such as going to the office, university campus, market and so on has become a need of urban society. Thus, the number of personal cars has boosted because of demands of mobility. Many cars in cities create the content of pollution to be high. Therefore, utilisation of electric cars, use of public transportations and opening green areas in the city are solutions to curtail the rise of this case.

Firstly, utilisation of electric cars can be a consideration to reduce the pollution because electric automobiles make use of electricity as a substitute for fossil fuels – which we know increase the number of emission in the air.  In addition, we also know that the hybrid car uses a combination of electrical and conventional machine. Although electric cars emit less pollution than hybrid cars, both types of cars will help to reduce the pollution if we ban other types of cars that use fossil fuels.

Secondly, use of public transportations such the bus, train, and the subway could be another great way to keep off using private cars and to reduce carbon emission. From my perspective, there are many advantages of using public transportations and to promote the use of public transportation the government has to take initiatives.

Lastly, the existence of green parks in the city is quite important because as far as I am concerned, opening green parks in the city can reduce the pollution or at least keep production of fresh air naturally.

To draw the conclusion, the rise of pollution level caused by private cars is in the unsafe level in many cities. So we have to use the best ways to reduce this problem such as using electric cars to replace ordinary cars, utilising public conveyance and establishing of natural areas like parks in the town.
