Pros & Cons

Strengths of the book series

  • There is a lot of vocabulary on many different topics;
  • Design exercises according to the route to help you better understand the vocabulary you have learned;
  • Simple reading exercises help you familiarize yourself with the type of exercises and questions encountered in the Reading test.

Disadvantages of the book

  • The only downside of the book is that the number of words is quite large, so it will be difficult to determine effective learning and review methods.

4000 Essential English Words Study Guide

Turn the table of contents of each book to see which book has many words you do not know, then start from that book. Usually, my classmates start learning from book number 2 or 3.

Every day should only learn about 5 words, you should not know more than this.

Use Quizlet or Memrise (website or app) to store your vocabulary lists; Use one of these two guys to study-review-test vocabulary continuously.

Practice making sentences with each word. Note that you should make sentences with simple and easy-to-understand content. If you don’t know how to make a sentence, you can use the example given in the book and edit it a little bit into your example. It would help if you used Facebook as a diary to record examples from 5 new words you learn daily.

Remember the following review rule to make sure you can remember the first 5 words you learned 3 months ago:

  • Study today.
  • Review tomorrow.
  • Review the day after tomorrow.
  • Review 1 week away.
  • Review 2 weeks apart, 3 weeks review, 1 month review, 2 months review (in short, a 7-time review cycle for easy remembering).
