Ace the IELTS: IELTS General Module – How to Maximize Your Score is a self-study book for intensive IELTS preparation to assist students in achieving their highest possible score. All of the ideas, tactics, strategies, and recommendations are geared at improving the students’ scores by enhancing their task-solving speed and avoiding common errors. Ace the IELTS is loved by both instructors and students.

Ace the IELTS: IELTS General Module Review

Ace the IELTS: IELTS General Module – How to Maximize Your Score provides a guide to IELTS general preparation (GT). This book analyses both the paper-based and computer-based versions of the IELTS examination. Although it is not a physically appealing IELTS book (its layout is dominated by text), it is loaded with information and suggestions covering almost every area of the exam. There is additional downloadable information accessible through a URL provided in the book.

Braverman states at the outset, “This guide is here to teach you the IELTS test, not the English language.” Indeed, there are no grammatical instructions here. Rather, the focus is on strategies for approaching the examination. She states at the outset that this will need dealing with time, which is a formidable obstacle in each segment.

Braverman provides advice for the IELTS Listening tests in the introduction of Ace the IELTS. These include activities you may do before and during the exam, including listening to passages many times to distinguish between terms and — of course — reading the directions for each section of the exam attentively. There are several bits of advice here, some of which are more helpful than others. There is surely something that might be of use to almost everyone.

The same strategy is used for the IELTS Reading tests. There are several strategies for approaching the various questions covered. She provides precise guidance on how to approach each of the most frequent inquiry types in order to find answers quickly and efficiently. This is one of the book’s highlights.

For the IELTS Writing tests, Braverman discusses the two assignments and the many letter kinds you may be required to compose. She teaches formal and informal language and provides examples of important words. There are some helpful example letters, however, the arrangement may not be the most straightforward, requiring you to go back and forth between pages to properly comprehend the value and purpose of each section.

Regarding Task 2, Braverman describes three categories of essays, though there are really more than that. She presents them by grouping the many essay forms into three categories: Argument, Point of view, and Situation (APS). She provides usually sound suggestions and a novel technique dubbed “baby stages” that takes the applicant through the whole essay-writing process.

For the IELTS Speaking tests, there was somewhat less guidance than for the reading and listening sections, and it was less applicable. This part consisted mostly of example questions and responses. However, there was a decent list of things to avoid (like speaking too quickly).

All of this is governed by a study schedule. This is merely a recommended set of practice tasks and focuses on maximizing your present English proficiency. Since the scope of Ace the IELTS is IELTS-specific techniques rather than English learning, this makes sense.

However, it would be more appropriate to emphasize that IELTS, as an English test, is best approached through a balance of IELTS practice and English practice and that the one-month timeframe would be best spent, for example, polishing your grammar skills.

Ace the IELTS provides several practice exams of decent quality. The writing style of the book allows you to read the main chapters (like the Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking tips) in any order you want. You don’t have to follow the order in which the book is written. If you don’t have a lot of time, you can just read this book and do the exercises contained therein without the need for extra exercises.
