Describe a group or organization that works to protect the environment.

You should say:

  • what type of group or organization it is
  • how you know about them
  • what things they do

and explain how their initiatives and actions protect the environment.

[Instruction: You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.]

Sample Answer 1

It is a good thing that many organizations are working in cohesion to protect our environment all over the world and around the clock. Greenpeace is one such organization, and today I would be more than happy to talk about what it really does and how it helps protect our environment.

I first learned about this great organization about a decade ago on our national television when it was trying to spearhead a campaign to prevent our government from making a power plant project that was based on coal. Now, even though I am not sure if this environmental organization was able to make an immediate impact on the decision-making process of the concerned authority inside our government, it surely did a great job of creating massive awareness among the environmentalists of my country in the long run. And that’s probably why our government eventually decided to stop this power plant project about 5 years ago.

Anyway, since then, I have learned about the many important roles this organization plays in order to protect our environment by doing things like protecting endangered whales and seals from hunting, the cessation of the process of dumping toxic chemical and radioactive wastes at sea, and the end of nuclear-weapons testing.

Being founded in the year 1971 as a non-profit organization, this organization doesn’t only draw attention to many environmental problems and climate changes, which our world is facing today, through the acts of documentation, but also plays an active role in investigating and exposing the environmental crimes of people, companies/ corporations, and governments around the globe.

So, no wonder that the initiatives and actions, which are always direct and yet nonviolent, of Greenpeace, have helped mobilize public opinion against environmentally destructive practices. Besides, because of its bold and decisive role in protecting the environment, our world has also seen many favorable rulings from national and international regulatory bodies on controlling environmental abuses with considerable success. In fact, it would be fair to suggest that our world would have become a much more environmentally dangerous place without organizations like Greenpeace.

Sample Answer 2

As a responsible citizen of this earth, I like to remain informed about the environmental issues which are continuously being faced by our planet. And, to do this, I try to follow the activities of different environmental organizations of the world, such as “Greenpeace”. So, thank you for this cue card topic; I will try to talk about it in brief now.

This non-profit environmental organization was founded in 1971. However, even though, it is still unclear who started this organization, it surely announced its presence clearly and loudly in that year by protesting nuclear testing in an area called Amchitka, off the West Coast of Alaska, in the USA. Since then, Greenpeace had continued to protest against nuclear testing. They also led protests against toxic-waste dumping, whaling, and other environmental issues, including protecting oceans and ancient forests, phasing out fossil fuels and promoting renewable energy in order to stop climate change, preventing genetically modified organisms from being released into nature, to end nuclear contamination, and to ensure safe and sustainable trade.

As a result, Greenpeace today has established itself to be a powerful influence on global environmental protection. Anyway, Greenpeace has a global presence in over 40 countries around the world and operates independently of the governments. Naturally, it doesn’t accept any funding from governments, corporations, or political parties – its work is funded by ordinary people, which means it is free to confront governments and corporations responsible for destroying the natural world and pushing for real change.

Since ordinary citizens of the world run this organization, anybody can become a member of this organization as long as he or she is serious about protecting the environment of this world.

To achieve its noble goals, the organization investigates case by case, documents and exposes the causes of environmental destruction, and then start lobbying, creating consumer pressure, and mobilizing members of the general public to effect the necessary changes. They also take peaceful direct action to protect our Earth and its environment by promoting solutions for a green and peaceful future.
