How IELTS Target Band 7.0 Works
IELTS Target 7.0 is a condensed course for students who aim to earn an IELTS score above 6.5 and who seek to increase their overall English proficiency to a very advanced level. The brief course is comprised of four parts, each with five modules. The sounds and texts are as difficult, if not more difficult, than those you may face on the examination. Practice with writing focuses on Task 2 writing problems and increasingly complex discursive conversations.
The organization of the five modules is briefly described in the next section. The methodology varies from IELTS Target 5.0 and IELTS Target 6.5 in that the Speaking Module follows the Listening, Reading, and Writing Modules and reinforces what has been previously learned.
The vocabulary is covered in the part on language development at the conclusion of the Listening, Reading and Writing Units. Throughout each module, key vocabulary from recordings, texts, and compositions is studied and developed via follow-up tasks. You must constantly compare English idioms with their analogs in your own tongue.
IELTS Target 7.0 has each subject with a Test Practice Module that focuses on listening and reading exam procedures. A special section at the rear of the Course Book contains additional exam-style writing assignments.
The Highlights of IELTS Target 7.0
The book addresses the increasing trend of institutions demanding higher language competence from students. This level provides less pre-skills guidance and scaffolding, and more post-skills practice and analysis. It aims to develop core language skills and improve scores through more challenging topics and tasks.
Listening
At this level, you will lack the pre-task preparation and scaffolding that comprised a significant portion of IELTS Target 6.5. After completing the activities, you will concentrate mostly on vocabulary and sometimes on grammar. The practice focuses mostly on Sectors 3 and 4 of the Listening exam since these are the most difficult. Some of the recordings are likely somewhat longer than they will be on the test, and there are also extra questions associated with each recording.
Reading
The Reading Module in the IELTS Target 7.0 book follows the same architecture as the Listening Module. The texts are the same length as those on the examination, although there are more questions per text than on the actual examination. Texts are often on more particular subjects – the environment, scientific research, etc. – about which you will have less background knowledge before reading. The language development component of the curriculum will concentrate on text structure and discourse elements at times.
Writing
The Writing Module focuses on writing assignments for Task 2, the more difficult of the two tasks. Each course analyzes and gives practice with a certain exam-required writing ability or strategy. A common strategy is to contrast excellent and bad model compositions. Four more assignments are offered in a separate section at the conclusion of the course, each with an excellent example.
The IELTS Target 7.0’s Writing Module includes grammar checks. Grammar is handled as a review, and if you feel you need more rigorous practice with a specific issue, you should consult a suitable grammar resource in your own time or contact your instructor for assistance in class.
Speaking
In lieu of basic questions, you will practice exchanges characteristic of Parts 2 and 3 of the Speaking exam. Some of the speaking tasks require the use of more complex vocabulary than you are likely to encounter in the real Speaking examination, and a number of the activities involve discussing the meaning of proverbs.
Exam Practice
The Exam Practice Module alternates between reading and listening practice. Four more writing assignments are supplied at the conclusion of the course in a separate area. Recordings and texts are often the same lengths as those on the examination, but a higher number of questions are posed than on the examination.
