Are you having difficulty in Listening skills? Of the 4 skills in the IELTS test, Listening is always a problem that causes many students a headache because when doing the test, candidates need to mobilize many abilities at the same time: you have to listen, process information, and Read the question and just write down the answer. Understanding this problem, in the following article, 9IELTS would like to introduce to readers the book: Lessons for IELTS Listening.

Lessons for IELTS Listening belongs to the Lessons for IELTS series of books, published by New Oriental Education & Technology Group – a leading provider of foreign language materials in China.

The book is designed to help learners systematically acquire necessary Listening skills. The exercises in the book are selected for learners to have an additional source of in-depth practice, along with helpful test tips to help learners correctly handle the types of questions in the test.

With this book, learners will develop the ability to listen – understand dialogues and monologues, expressed through many different intonations, with familiar topics in the exam.

Book Contents

Lessons for IELTS Listening includes an overview of the IELTS Listening test, and the following content is divided into 2 main parts:

  • The first part consists of 20 lessons by topic – topics often appearing in the current IELTS test. Vocabulary knowledge, test-taking techniques and practice exercises for each type of Listening question are presented in each lesson.
  • The second part provides answers to the above episodes (Answer key).

The content of each lesson has the same progression as a session in an IELTS preparation class.

  • The lesson begins with This Unit and IELTS – a summary of the main content of the lesson and the purpose of this lesson in preparing for the IELTS exam. Following this section, the “Introducing the topic” section allows learners to discuss the lesson topic.

Target Readers

Lessons for IELTS Listening helps learners to form necessary Listening skills and adds some vocabulary by topic to support learners in Listening – understanding. Although self-study students can also take advantage of this book, Lessons for IELTS Listening is suitable for classes of about 5 students or more because some activities in the book require interaction between learners.

Pros & Cons

Lessons for IELTS Listening book is designed with visual illustrations with images, colour tables to make the learning experience more exciting and accessible, reducing the pressure and boredom of self-study. , especially for those who are just preparing for the IELTS exam.

After each listening practice, the following activities are Listening, such as discussion by topic. Small speaking exercises are also designed closely to the IELTS Speaking test, allowing learners to not only practice skills but also get used to the Speaking test format.

In addition, the strict implementation of activities at the end of the lesson plays a significant role in consolidating the Vocabulary and grammar learned at the beginning of the lesson, helping those units of knowledge be applied in practice.

Lessons for IELTS Listening is designed by topic with highly up-to-date Listening test formats, which are often found in the IELTS test in recent years.

Throughout the lessons, there are specific instructions on the steps and strategies for taking the IELTS Listening test in different formats, presented in simple language – less academic, combined with illustrated media. However, Lessons for IELTS Listening is a book dedicated to forming test techniques and practising Listening skills for the IELTS test. The book contains thematic lessons, instructions on the test process and practice exercises in each format.

However, the book does not include a complete IELTS Listening test, so those who need quick practice may feel that this book is not entirely suitable for them. In fact, with this need, you need to focus more on IELTS preparation materials, such as Cambridge IELTS or Succeed in IELTS 9 Practice Tests.

Lessons for IELTS Listening Study Guide

Some of the activities in Lessons for IELTS Listening are designed to be done in pairs (Work in pairs/ Discuss in pairs), so it would be a good idea if you could “invite” one or more friends. have the same needs and are at the same level to discuss and do pairing activities that increase interaction and share ideas.

However, if you don’t have a classmate, don’t worry because these activities can be flexibly done individually. For example, I critique myself instead of discussing it with a friend – perhaps by mind-mapping ideas and then reasoning through the critical process.

Besides, one of the common problems learners face when faced with an IELTS Listening exercise is a lack of Vocabulary, missing important information or hearing but not knowing how to answer.

To overcome these obstacles, you can refer to the LinearThinking method developed by the academic team at 9IELTS on the English learning website: 9ielts.com. With LinearThinking in Listening, each problem has its solution to help improve them effectively.
