Writing: Learn to write better academic essays (Collins, 2013) is a self-study guide geared toward those on pre-sessional EAP courses or in their first year of undergraduate studies. The word ‘better’ in the title emphasizes that this is a book for improving students’ writing abilities, such as transitioning from tests such as IELTS and TOEFL to ‘real’ academic papers.

Writing Learn to Write Better Academic Essays Review

Writing Learn to Write Better Academic Essays is designed so students or classes can study through it from beginning to end or select the chapters most pertinent to their present learning objectives. 11 chapters cover diverse academic writing skills and language considerations pertinent to written communication.

  • The writing purpose (Chapter 1).
  • The expectations of the academic reader (Chapters 2 and 4).
  • Content and research (Chapters 3 and 6).
  • Academic principles (Chapters 4, 5, 8 and 9).
  • Language points (Chapters 3, 5, 7 and 10).
  • The writing process from start to finish (Chapter 11).

Each chapter includes concise objectives, a self-evaluation quiz, information on the chapter’s writing focus, practical tasks, and important reminders, facilitating orientation. There are also “Tips” and glossary boxes throughout the chapters that clarify more advanced language.

The author believes one chapter would take approximately three to four hours to complete. There are lists of relevant phrases and examples of student writing in a range of topic areas that have been commented on towards the end of the book.

At the end of Writing Learn to Write Better Academic Essays, you will find example essays with comments on their strengths, weaknesses and differences. Instructions on how to respond to the grading criteria and assignment feedback. Glossary of key terms. A major comprehensive answer.

Writing Learn to Write Better Academic Essays Study Guide

Each chapter will likely take three to four hours. Take regular breaks, and don’t try to study for too long. Thirty to sixty minutes is a reasonable amount of research time. Regular learning is better than occasional intensive learning.

Read through the previous chapter to get an overview without doing any exercises. This will help you see what you want to focus on. Try the exercises before checking the Answers. Be an active learner.

When writing your essays, refer to the book’s appropriate sections and exercises. Ask a more experienced writer to give you feedback on your essay draft.

Don’t think of an essay as a finished product but as a learning process. This is an opportunity to show that you can find out information about a topic, develop your ideas, organize your thoughts, and communicate your understanding to others.

Don’t rush this process; find out what works best for you. Tailor the suggestions in this book to your learning style and context.

With practice, your writing will improve, and your confidence will grow so you can show your tutor your true abilities and potential.
