On the journey to conquer the IELTS certificate, you must be constantly faced with many questions. In the beginning, those questions might be “Out of the many IELTS books, what should I study?”. As for those who are about to enter the exam, the question is probably, “Which book is reliable enough to send the last leg of the journey?”. To help you answer that question, let’s learn about Practical IELTS Strategies Test Practice Book with 9IELTS.

Practical IELTS Strategies Test Practice Book is the fifth book of the Practical IELTS Strategies series, after the skills training books. Therefore, most of the analysis of strategies for dealing with skills at the end of the book has been mentioned in previous volumes of the book series, especially the reference articles.

Practical IELTS Strategies Test Practice Book Review

Book Contents

Practical IELTS Strategies Test Practice Book provides learners with 6 practice test questions in IELTS Academic format. Since Task 1 of the Writing test includes six types of charts (line charts, bar charts, pie charts, tables of numbers, maps, and diagrams), the book ensures all of the above are covered face in the subject. This also means that all question types, or test components, are fully integrated in this book.

Practical IELTS Strategies Test Practice Book is divided into 7 parts:

  • The first part introduces an overview of the structure, content of the test and the band score of the IELTS test.
  • The second part is a compilation of 6 IELTS mock tests (full IELTS), each with all 4 skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing.
  • The third part is the answers for Reading and Listening questions.
  • The fourth part helps readers review Reading procedures and strategies.
  • The fifth part provides sample writing answers for the Writing questions.
  • The sixth part provides sample answers and an analysis of question-answering strategies for the Speaking section of Test 1

The last part includes Listening scripts (records of Listening lessons) and answers to exercises in Word Learning Time.

Target Readers

Practical IELTS Strategies Test Practice Book includes real test questions for practice, so this document is only effective for students who can take a complete test and have mastered how to handle the test types. Thus, the best time to practice with this book series is about 2 months before the exam. Learners can create space and time of absolute concentration to practice with the questions provided in the book.

However, thanks to some tips and instructions on how to do the test in the book, those still having difficulty handling the test can also refer to the book, or prioritize completing this book before the series of more advanced questions such as Cambridge IELTS or Recent Actual Tests.

Pros & Cons

In the name of the book “Practical IELTS Strategies Test Practice Book”, there are two notable keywords: practical and strategies. Practical means applicable, and highly practical, and strategies are understood as strategies and ways of doing things. Therefore, although the book is called “Test Practice Book”, it includes not only dry IELTS Tests for practice, but also provides many handy tips & strategies for review purposes.

This is the highlight of this book, because most of the IELTS preparation books on the market are usually designed specifically for a certain purpose: either practice (only includes exam questions and answers), or review practice and supplement skills and knowledge (including supplementary exercises and instructions for doing assignments). Practical IELTS Strategies Test Practice Book almost does both.

Practical IELTS Strategies Test Practice Book does not have an audio file for the Speaking section, so it does not describe the rest of the aspects of the Speaking test: Pronunciation & Fluency (pronunciation and fluency). About the above theory scorecard, Pronunciation is only one of the four criteria for marking the exam, but it is the thing that makes the biggest impression on the examiner.

If you present a speech that uses top-notch vocabulary with complex structure but lacks fluency, natural accents will also make a bad impression on the examiner.

In the Sample answer to Writing section, the author sometimes gives his personal opinion. This is a taboo when writing Task 1.

For example, in the sample essay for Task 1, Test 1 (page 135), there is the following paragraph: “Moving on to cities, the outlook was brighter, with the percentage without work starting lowest (2.5%). Yet problem immediately occurred, pushing the rate to 4% …”. In this case, the graph above does not indicate any “problem”, or mention any reason for the high unemployment rate.

Practical IELTS Strategies Test Practice Book Study Guide

Practical IELTS Strategies Test Practice Book provides full IELTS test questions for 4 skills: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. For those familiar with how to do the test and who already have your effective strategies, you can proceed to time the mock test. However, for those of you who are just starting in the practice phase, and without much experience, here is the recommended 5-step process:

  • Step 1: Read the Reading Strategies section to review how and note when doing the IELTS Reading test types.
  • Step 2: Study the Speaking Sample Answer to understand better how your Speaking is assessed.
  • Step 3: Do the test-timed
  • Step 4: Scan for Reading & Listening answers, mark mistakes and find out why they are wrong and how to understand them again.
  • Step 5: For the Writing test, read the sample answer to compare ideas, vocabulary, grammar and how to organize paragraphs and essays. Carefully read the comments (comments) after each sample article to better understand the good and the points that need to be overcome in that article. From there, relate to your writing.

Conquering your dream IELTS score is a long journey and needs to be guided in the right direction. When entering the practice phase, good IELTS preparation material is not enough because each book has its shortcomings. Therefore, in addition to Practical IELTS Strategies Test Practice Book, you need to read and combine many other practice books, learn more experiences from generations of brothers and sisters, teachers, and have a reasonable review plan. Thus, the new foundation of success becomes more and more solid.
