I am glad to have such an excellent topic to discuss, and I would like to thank you for the opportunity.
In our life, we often face challenges and obstacles that are tough to overcome all by ourselves. A little help from others can save the day, and no matter how much we criticise the human race for being self-centred, we can’t deny the selfless acts that we are often offered by others, even sometimes by strangers. Thus a few months ago, someone named Khalif Ashraf did something genuinely kind for which I will never forget this benevolent soul.
I was on holiday in Penang Island in Malaysia last year with my wife and my four-year-old daughter. As soon as we arrived on the island from the Muscat International Airport, we realised that the island was getting ready for the Chinese New Year. Due to this, it was packed with tourists. We hired a taxi, and the driver was a resident who introduced himself as Khalif Ashraf. He was in his mid-thirties. We realised his friendly attitude as soon as we got in his car. It was already 10.00 pm, and my daughter and wife were exhausted. I had a list of a few hotels to stay in and told the driver to take us to these hotels. Unfortunately, none of the hotels had any room they could offer us. Things were getting disordered, and we were hoping to get a room.
Mr Ashraf, our taxi driver, understood our dilemma and offered to take us to a few hotels he knew personally. Initially, I was confused as my previous experience taught me that taxi drivers often get commissions by bringing guests to below-standard hotels, which charge a hefty amount. However, I agreed to his proposition, and he did a remarkable job finding a nice hotel for us at a comparatively lower price. I was taken aback when he told the hotel manager to give us a 20% discount, for which he used one of his identification cards. It was completely unexpected and so kind an act that I will never forget it.
I felt more perplexed when he denied taking the taxi rent for the extra distance he drove us to this hotel. It was a great example of kindness and empathy. He even called me the next day and met us with a few gifts for my daughter. This event was a sharp reminder for me to trust humanity all the time.

Getting stranded in the middle of a night out of nowhere is certainly not a good feeling when you are alone. But, that’s precisely what happened to me about a couple of years ago when I was coming back to my home on a late evening after finishing some important work at my company factory. On that day, when I decided to hit the road after finishing my work, it was already 10:00 pm.
I felt tired after finishing my work. So, I decided to rest on the roadside in my old car, which, as I think of it now, wasn’t exactly a perfect idea as I fell asleep. Not sure how long I had slept, but when I woke up, it was about 12:20 pm, and I needed to drive at least another hour or so to reach my home. However, after driving for probably about 20 minutes, the car started to act on me and then eventually came to a complete stop.
I tried to fix it without any success. Then I called my car “towing” company, but what they told me wasn’t very encouraging as it would have taken them at least 50 minutes to reach me. So, anyway, I just decided to wait inside my car while asking for a ride occasionally, but nobody was in the mood to help me! Then, my ” saviour” came just when I was getting ready to spend the rest of the night inside my “dead” car.
Introducing himself as Mr Raymond, he was kind enough to ask me whether I needed him to help fix my car or give me a ride. I requested him to give me a ride after explaining my dead car engine to him. He gladly obliged. Not knowing where he was from or what kind of person he was (I guess it was the fear of the “unknown”), I decided to accept his help. Anyway, as if he could read what was going on in my mind, he decided to ease my tension by providing me with more details about him and his family. When we arrived at my home, it was about 1:00 at night.
I didn’t know much about Mr Raymond as we didn’t talk much during our little “journey”. But whatever I knew about him after that little chit-chat, it was enough for me to conclude that he was ready to help a person in distress any time of the day or night. I felt like I just couldn’t thank him enough for helping me on a night when nobody was willing to do so. I thought it was because of people like Raymond that this world was still safer for us to live in. In the end, when he was ready to hit the road, I requested him to let me know if he ever needed any help, not because of what he did for me. Still, without some “kind” people like Raymond among us, the entire “human race” probably would have been “lost” in its complicated journey.

Since both of my parents are engaged in two different professions, I have to be alone at home most of the time, and during a sudden illness in the absence of my parents, one of my neighbours helped me immensely.
Aunt Sally came to my help during a sudden physical illness. She is our neighbour and lives just opposite our apartment. She is the wife of my father’s business partner and is very kind. Although she has two kids, she loves me like her own kid, too and never makes any hesitation to share her love and affection with me. I also paid proper respect to her for her kindness to me. In the absence of my parents, she took care of me, and even I stayed at her apartment when my father goes abroad with her husband for business purposes, and my mother went to meet her parent.
I came back from my school early as I was feeling uncomfortable. Father dropped me at the school and said he would take me back when school was finished. But suddenly, I started feeling uncomfortable. I was affected by a high fever, and a frequent cough accompanied it. My muscles were filled with pain, and I felt like someone was beating me. Then I asked my class teacher for an emergency leave. The teacher allowed me to leave the school and sent a school staff with me for my safety. The school staff carried me to my home and handed me over to Aunt Sally, who informed me that she would take my care until my parents returned.
When I returned home, Aunt Sally took my responsibilities on her shoulder and took immediate action to make me feel comfortable. She informed the issue to my parents over the telephone and asked them to return as soon as possible. She took me to her apartment, wiped my body with wet clothes and gave me some painkillers and other necessary medications after consultation with a doctor. Then I slept on a bed in that apartment, and when I woke up, I saw my parents sitting beside me. I would have been in trouble if Aunt Sally was not at home that day.
I am genuinely grateful to her for her kindness to me. She has done a lot of things for me. She never missed one of my birthdays and did not even forget to wish me my birthday. I am fortunate that I have a neighbour like her. She is a motherly figure to me, and I feel happy when I meet or talk with her. When I remembered trembling with fever and my muscles were filled with unbearable pain, she was the only woman who came for my assistance. She cared for me like her own son and undertook all the necessary steps for my cure until the arrival of my parents. It is a blessing to me I have such a great neighbour.

So far, I have not fallen into trouble while out of home for my professional engagements until I lost my purse last month. It was a difficult situation for me, and I could not seek help from others for my reserved nature. Mr Iqbal came to my help at that moment. Thank you for the question. It reminds me of the situation I was in that day.
Movement for a female in the streets of Mumbai is adamant if you do not have any individual transportation system. Riding public buses or hiring a taxi is irritating. I lost my purse on a public bus returning home after a significant working day. When I was to pay for the ticket, I could not find the purse and became perplexed about that. Mr Iqbal paid for my ticket and told me that he saw from the window that a kid, around 13/ 14 years old, ran away with the purse while I was riding on the bus.
I was returning home from my office like the other days. But I went for shopping to get some necessary things for my family. So, there were some other bags and stuff with me and I could not take care of everything together. I left the office half an hour before the usual working hour to complete the shopping. When everything was done, I started my residence in the southern part of Mumbai. I was waiting for the public bus to drop me right before the entrance of the apartment complex I live in. The incident happened before riding on the bus. Usually, I take my purse in my hand in such situations, but this time I kept it in a bag on my left side. I kept the purse in the bag to pay the ticket price quickly. But it was a disaster for me.
I have known Mr Iqbal for a long time. He is a friend of my husband and lives a few blocks from us. He tried to tell me about the issue while riding, but I could not comprehend it clearly as I had to handle the bags and groceries. Later, when I took my seat, and the ticket seller approached me, I could not find the purse. It was an awkward situation for me. I rode on the bus without its fare. Then Mr Iqbal came forward and told the ticket seller about the issue. And then he paid the ticket price for me. I was grateful to him. It was a great help for me on that day.
The feelings were mixed. I laughed at myself, and at the same time, I felt worried about the consequences of the event. If Mr Iqbal had not been there, it would be humiliating for me to the extreme. The other people would have laughed at me. I cannot think the worst – the ticker seller asking me to get off the bus before everyone. So, the presence of Mr Iqbal and his cordial support brought a sense of relief to me. I thanked him and also invited him to visit us at our home. Hearing the matter, my husband also expressed his gratitude for this task. In a word, it was an unusual experience for me.
