Reading Time: 6 mins read

VIEWS

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Some people think parents should read or tell stories to children, while others think parents need not do that, as children can read books, watch TV or movies by themselves. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

You should write at least 250 words.

Sample Answer 1:

Parents take care of their children at every step. While some people believe that parents should teach children different stories, others believe that parents should not involve in that as children have the ability to understand and analyse those stories and lessons by themselves.

There are many benefits of teaching children by parents on stories. Children can understand stories by reading themselves, but not up to the level as older people can. As they grow up their analysing ability also will increase. Hence if parents make them understand stories by reading and translating, they can understand much better.  Not only that, if children start reading and watching stories by themselves, there is a possibility of misunderstanding  the concept of stories (If Moral stories), and also possibility of choosing the bad programs and stories by themselves. For instance, old people always advise parents to teach children good moral stories, which are used for them to improve and understand the values of a human being.

However, some people believe that parents should not always hold children for each and every step, as they read books, watch TV, so have the ability to understand the stories by reading themselves. People say that there are a lot of differences in today’s children compared to older days. It is proved that these day’s children have the ability to understand the situations and act according to that, they not only read stories but also can teach to others.  For example, in today’s schools, children who have just started schooling can learn and involve in multiple tasks much faster than their parents.

To sum up, though today’s children have the ability to analyse situations and stories much better, it is always the responsibility of parents to look after on how well they understand it. It depends on each child, how good they analyse.

Sample Answer 2:

A group of people believe that it is the responsibility of parents to read or share some stories to their children. On the contrary, another group of people disagree with it as they believe that every child could read their own books or find other kind entertainments by themselves. The following essay will discuss both views, but in my personal opinion, I do believe that children should be read or told some books by their parents.

For a number of reasons, many people think that it is mandatory for parents to tell stories or to read some books to their children. Firstly, based on some scientific research, it is found that children usually start reading from the age of five. And before they have the capability to read, it is recommended that children should be told and read some stories by their parents. Secondly, reading some books to children could increase the imaginative thinking of children. As parents read some stories to them, they will start in imaging the stories in their mind, which would positively impact on their brain’s development. Lastly, by reading and telling stories to children, it could strengthen the relationship between both sides.

On the other hand, other people think that children should be taught to read books or find other kinds of entertainments by themselves. These people believe that as parents, they are busy with their business, works or household activities; therefore they would not have time for reading some books or accompanying the children. Besides that, they also believe that children should learn to be independent at the earliest age.

In conclusion, people have different views about spending time for telling or reading some stories to children. I personally believe that as a parent, people should provide time for reading some books to their children, since it brings a lot of benefits for both parents and children.

Sample Answer 3:

While some people think that parents should read or tell stories to children, others think that parents need no to do that, as children can read books or watch TV or movies by themselves. These experiences give the children a good relationship with their parents, also is very important for the communication between parents and children.

In my opinion, parents should read or tell stories to children, because this little thing gives good memories of their childhood and share a good and an important time with their parents. For example, I remember my dad used to tell me stories every night before going to sleep, no matter how long or short were these stories, I always enjoyed his stories and I had a really good time with him. These days, parents work the whole day and the children spend time in school and to finish homework, so the only time they see each other is during the breakfast time and dinner time, therefore they do not have much time to share or talk. So in terms of establishing a strong bond between the children and parents, it is necessary to share the stories in person.

Children can read books or sit in front of the TV watching movies or some cartoons by themselves. Some people think that the communication between parents and kids in the future will be lost, as a consequence of that trend and because of the lack of parents’ time with the children.

My conclusion is, parents should read or tell stories to children and spend time with them. Little things can make big memories and good relationships.

Sample Answer 4:

Since the dawn of time, parents have been reading storybooks to their children. Throughout history, most especially mothers read stories that have lessons to be learned. Some believe that reading and telling good stories to children should be done by parents and some refute this for they can do all of that by themselves. These points of view will be discussed in this order.

It is believed by some that parents should read and tell stories to children. An idea that supports this is the psycho-social development theory of Erik Erikson where children should be easily acquired knowledge from the early childhood to school-age. It can be argued that parents especially mothers should be the one providing this. Thus, it is clear why some people gravitate towards this point of view.

On the other hand, many argue that parents do not need to do that for children are able to do those things by themselves. For example, my father and mother are both intelligent and they certainly believe that genes are hereditary. Therefore they knew that when I was a toddler until I graduated my elementary could read books that they have bought on my own. After analysing these facts, it is clear why many support this claim.

In conclusion, for reasons related to Erikson’s psychosocial development theory and hereditary of parents’ intellectual characteristics, the issue of whether parents should or should not read and tell stories to their children is supported and refuted by many. However, after analysing these two points of view, it is clear that children must have their parents with them in learning lessons in their story-reading. Hence, the argument that fathers and mothers should read and tell stories to their children can be supported. Thus doing this before bedtime to your children is highly recommended.
