Cambridge IELTS 3 is in the book series of the same name, published by Cambridge University Press – one of the most prestigious publishers in the world of English language learning in particular, and language skills in general.
For those who don’t know, Cambridge IELTS is a series of books about the IELTS exam published annually by Cambridge itself to give you the best orientation for those who are preparing for the IELTS exam. The book is a collection of many different sets of topics, and by exploiting these topics, readers will be able to decipher and grasp the structure of the exam. This will help you be more confident when entering the ‘battle’ with the exam.
Cambridge IELTS 3 Review
Cambridge Practice Test for IELTS 3 is divided into 4 main parts:
- The first part provides 4 IELTS Academic mock tests and 2 questions in General Training format. The Listening section in each test has an accompanying audio file.
- The second part is recording the Listening tests in the practice test (audio scripts).
- The third part includes answers to exercises of the Listening & Reading test sections (answer key).
- The last part is the answer sheet – sample answer sheets of skills in the IELTS test.
Each practice test in Cambridge 3 is designed in the same order as in an IELTS Academic test: going from Listening to Reading, Writing and finally Speaking. In there:
- The Listening test consists of 4 parts (4 sections) with 40 questions.
- The Reading practice test consists of 3 reading passages (3 passages) with 40 questions in total. The format of each passage is different for IELTS Academic & General Training.
- The Writing practice test includes Task 1 and Task 2. The format of each task is different with IELTS Academic & General Training.
- The Speaking test consists of 3 parts with question content closely following the actual test.
In Cambridge IELTS 3, audio files (CDs) with standard quality are attached to be used for the Listening test.
Because the Cambridge IELTS 3 book only provides practice questions, this document is suitable for those who have mastered the exam structure and tactics for handling different tests in each skill. Thus, the book is a reliable source of reference and practice for test takers before the official exam.
Pros & Cons
Most of the test types in the Cambridge IELTS 3 book are designed to closely follow the official IELTS test in both content and form (although some sections are a bit outdated – will be discussed in more detail below) so it allows learners to practice test-taking techniques, exam room skills, and expand their vocabulary related to the topic of Reading/Listening in the test. Of course, this cumulative move should only happen after you have completed the mock test.
Another bright spot is that Cambridge IELTS 3 is listed in the list of official test preparation materials of the prestigious Cambridge University – one of the three governing units of the IELTS exam, so this IELTS preparation book has a high level of accuracy. The reliability is very high and learners can rest assured to take the test with this set of questions.
Cambridge Practice Test for IELTS 3 provides IELTS practice tests in Academic format and designs 2 sets of IELTS General Training sample tests, suitable for learners of all ages – even if they need to prepare for the exam. IELTS Academic or General Training.
This makes Cambridge IELTS 3 different from other materials, when most of them focus on preparing for one type of IELTS test: Academic or General Training.
However, due to its long publication, Cambridge IELTS 3 contains some outdated test formats. Some test types, especially those in the Listening section, no longer appear in the same area of the IELTS Listening test in recent years.
For example, in the IELTS Listening test from 2017 and later, section 4 includes only one type of test, which is to fill in the note completion. However, in Cambridge IELTS 3, test 1, section 4 are designed as multiple choice, utterly different from the current IELTS test.
Although promoted as a practical assistant for learners in preparing for the test, Cambridge Practice Test for IELTS 3 should not be the first choice for those who are just starting to get acquainted with IELTS because it does not provide the necessary information. Detailed instructions are enough for you to do the test effectively.
If yes, you should only refer to the book briefly to get an overview of the “look” of an IELTS test.
Cambridge IELTS 3 Study Guide
As analyzed above, some questions in the IELTS mock test of the Cambridge IELTS 3 book no longer appear in the IELTS test at present, so learners need to pay attention to distinguish it from the new test format. (can be compared with Cambridge IELTS books from 9 onwards) so as not to confuse the test types with each other, adversely affecting the psychology of the test and the perception of the current exam format.
However, in terms of its standardization compared to other unreliable sources, learners can still take advantage of the book from this prestigious IELTS practice that serves as a source of practice for certain types of tests. Compare the test types in this book with Cambridge IELTS books from 9 and up, remove the old format and practice only the same form.
