IELTS Speaking Part 2: IELTS Cue Card/ Candidate Task Card.

Describe a person you know who makes a positive contribution to society.

You should say:

  • who this person is
  • what this person does
  • how you know about this person

and explain how this person makes a positive contribution to society.

[Instruction: You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.]

Model Answer:

Thank you for choosing such a great topic for me to talk about. I am lucky to have known quite a few people around me who, I think, make a tremendous and positive contribution to our society in one way or another, and today I would like to go ahead and talk about one of them.

The person I want to talk about is a high school teacher who lives also in the same neighbourhood as me. The people in my neighbourhood like to call him “Sir Dinesh”, not because he is a teacher, but because of the love and respect he commands from the people around him due to his noble thoughts and deeds. By the way, here it is worth mentioning that Dinesh Sir was my teacher also when I attended my junior high school about 10 years ago, and it was from that time that I happen to know this great person.

Of course, he doesn’t teach anymore because of his old age, but that doesn’t prevent him from offering advice to those students who drop out of high school before their graduation. In fact, it is because of his sincere efforts and continuous engagement with the “dropped out” students, dozens of students, if not more, from our city, have gone back to their high schools again to complete their graduation. But, he just doesn’t limit himself to helping “strayed” students, but also works with the community leaders to help the marginalized people of our society in whichever capacity that might be.

So, I just wish there were many other people like Dinesh sir in our society because it is indeed people like him who help our young people become productive citizens of our country, not only by offering them proper education but also by advising them to choose the right path. Besides, the noble efforts of Dinesh sir also teach the members of our society to become more compassionate about each other’s plights and needs, and thus, in turn, help us co-exist in peace and harmony with each other.
